Why do we need to add sodium carboxymethyl cellulose to washing powder?

2025-01-04

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) is added to washing powder for the following main functions:

1. Prevent dirt from re-depositing

During the washing process, after the dirt is washed off the clothes, if there is no suitable dispersant, it is easy to re-attach to the surface of the clothes, resulting in poor washing effect. Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose can adsorb on the surface of dirt particles, making them carry the same charge. By using the repulsion between the charges, the dirt particles can be stably dispersed in the detergent without being deposited on the clothes again, thus ensuring that the clothes are relatively clean after washing.

2. It plays a certain protective role on the fabric

It can form a thin protective film on the surface of the fabric, reduce the damage that other ingredients in the washing powder (such as surfactants, some surfactants are more alkaline or have a more "powerful" decontamination effect) may cause to the fabric fibers, help maintain the original softness, strength and other properties of the fabric, extend the service life of the fabric, and enable the clothes to maintain a good texture after multiple washings.

3. Helps improve the stability of detergents

Sodium carboxymethyl cellulose can increase the viscosity of detergents, making the system of detergents more stable, so that various detergent ingredients can be evenly dispersed in it, and stratification will not easily occur during storage and use, ensuring that the detergent can exert stable and good washing effects every time it is used.

4. Improve the appearance and use experience of washing products

Appropriate addition can make the washing powder have better molding properties, make its particles fuller and more uniform, and have a more high-quality appearance. Moreover, during use, due to its adjustment of properties such as viscosity, consumers will feel smoother and better in the process of dissolving washing powder, scrubbing, etc.
