What is the Difference Between Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose and Carboxymethyl Cellulose?

2022-12-12

The abbreviation of carboxymethyl cellulose is CMC, which is a natural product derived from cellulose and has many advantages that natural rubber and grain pulp do not have. It is soluble in water, can significantly increase the viscosity of the solution, and has the functions of thickening, dispersing, emulsifying, suspending, stabilizing and protecting colloids.

The chemical reaction of CMC has two steps:

1. The alkalinization reaction of cellulose and alkali to generate alkali cellulose and the etherification reaction of alkali cellulose and monochloroacetic acid

Alkalinization: [C6H7O2(OH)3] n + nNaOH→[C6H7O2(OH)2ONa]n + nH2O

2. Etherification reaction of alkali cellulose and monochloroacetic acid

Etherification: [C6H7O2(OH)2ONa ]n + nClCH2COONa →[C6H7O2(OH)2OCH2COONa]n + nNaCl

It can be seen from the above chemical reaction equation that sodium carboxymethyl cellulose is not introduced into sodium on the basis of carboxymethyl cellulose. In fact, (sodium) alkali cellulose has been generated during the alkalization reaction. It is then synthesized by introducing carboxymethyl groups.

So in fact sodium carboxymethyl cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose are the same thing.
