Sodium Carboxymethyl Cellulose (CMC) and Polyanionic Cellulose (PAC) in Oil and Gas Drilling

2022-12-19

LUDE CHEM offers a complete range of anionic cellulosic polymers for the drilling industry, following the international standards as quality benchmark while contributing to the end users' over all well cost.

During the drilling of exploration and production wells for oil & gas and water, LUDE® CMC (Carboxymethyl Cellulose) & LUDEPAC® PAC (Polyanionic Cellulose) series of products are used for two primary functions to form a filter cake at the borehole wall in order to minimize the water loss and to control the rheology of the fluid system.

Apart from above mentioned two main functions, LUDE® CMC and LUDEPAC® PAC;

√ Provide shale inhibition by preventing well bore against collapse due to their film forming properties,

√ Improve the cooling and lubricating properties of the drilling fluid,

√ Help protect the thermal and biological stability of the fluid.

LUDE® CMC and LUDEPAC® PAC series of cellulosic polymers are biodegradable environmentally friendly non-toxic compatible drilling fluid additives which increase the performance of the fluid system in order to properly carry out its functions in the drilling.

The product range:

√ LUDE® CMC LV functions as a fluid loss control agent without substantially increasing the viscosity of the fluid system. Due to its rheology control properties on the fluid system, increased drill solids transport capacity is obtained. It also helps the fluid suspending mud weighting agents by encapsulating them.

√ LUDE® CMC HV functions as a high-yield viscosifier while controlling the fluid loss and providing shale inhibition. Due to its rheology control properties on the fluid system, increased drill solids transport capacity is obtained. It also helps the fluid suspending mud weighting agents by encapsulating them.

√ LUDEPAC® PAC LV is primarily used to reduce and to control the filtration rate while stabilizing the rheology of the mud without substantially increasing the viscosity regime of the fluid system. It also provides shale inhibition as a protective colloid and improves the filter cake quality and stability between the wellbore and the formation. The PAC LV series of LUDEPAC® are available in different grades.

√ LUDEPAC® PAC ULV is a very low viscosity polymer, designed to have the minimum and/or almost no increase in the viscosity regime of the fluid system while reducing the water loss. Being a very low viscosity polymer, LUDEPAC® ULV provides flexibility to control the rheology of the fluid system at different concentrations without substantially increasing viscosity. Thus this results as an advantage compared to standard Low Viscosity PAC products, when such a flexibility over the viscosity regime is required.

√ LUDEPAC® PAC HV is primarily used to improve the viscosity of the drilling fluid to the desired degree while controlling the water loss at the most possible low rates. By adding the product increased Apparent Viscosity and Yield Point is obtained, subsequently better and higher drill solids transfer capacity is established. It also provides shale inhibition as a protective colloid and improves the filter cake quality and stability between the wellbore and the formation. The PAC HV series of LUDEPAC® are available in different grades.
